YUKIKOMIZUTANI
YUKIKOMIZUTANI is pleased to present ‘JARRING HARMONY’, a solo exhibition from Yabiku Henrique Yudi, from 20 September to 19 October 2024.
Born in São Paulo, Brazil and raised in Japan, Yabiku’s work reflects his childhood experiences, which encompass cultural clashes due to different races and classes in the multiethnic country of Brazil, and the old and new clashes of traditions and values in technologically advanced Japan. He describes the events occurring in his creative process as “clashes” and incorporates various elements of “clashes” into his work, such as glossy pre-made metals (mesh wire, chains, plates) and nearly discarded old paper, traditional monochrome silkscreens and the latest 2.5D prints, and photos capturing “clashes” between people cut out from old magazines. The combination of graphics from old magazines, which can be considered waste, and ready-made materials from industrial fields that are removed from the realm of art, blur the lines between “artworks and consumables,” “entertainment and utility,” and “greater good and functional definition.” Moreover, they challenge society’s tendency towards binary narratives such as “love and hate,” “order and chaos,” and “beauty and distortion.”
In this exhibition at YUKIKOMIZUTANI, the first in two years, the aim is to attempt a re-recognition and reinterpretation of the “discord” contained in the works. Returning to the roots of skateboard culture, which is the origin of his creativity, and aiming for a new frontier in collage art that incorporates architectural elements currently being explored, along with common characteristics like “DIY,” “improvisation,” “anti-establishment spirit,” and “disorder.”
